Circles of Safety 1 & 2
-
Part 1: This workshop is to help all adults who care for children learn how we can better protect children form sexual abuse through safety steps and prevention tools. This isn’t a workshop that will help you solve the sexual behavior problems of the children you serve but rather focuses on how to keep them safe through understanding basic healthy sexuality information and the role that can play in children’s protection. Talking about sex and children is never easy. However, we must talk about the sexual development and behaviors of children if we are to understand what is necessary to help them. We need to develop our confidence and comfort level to bring up questions and concerns about children and sexual development – so that we can help them develop their own safe sexual behaviors.
-
Part 2: Most you work in the “not green” prevention levels. This is not a treatment training. We’re focused on how we know something is a problem and how to respond to these concerns and helps kids – maybe we can interrupt a potential abuse situation or maybe we’re responding to one. In all cases, we have an opportunity to improve outcomes for children. So if we think of Green as Primary Prevention – before anything happens and preventing anything from happening, we’re going to think of Yellow as secondary prevention – stopping something from happening or that’s about to happen. And Red is what we call tertiary prevention – preventing abuse from re-occurring – perhaps generationally.
Beyond The Bars
-
Stats, high risk age group, alcohol is a common ‘weapon’ used to facilitate sexual violence, we have learned that the majority of students wouldn’t engage in sexual activity without using alcohol that lowers inhibitions; -young folks often consume alcohol in social situations; -understand power difference and the impact alcohol can have; how perpetrators will use alcohol to facilitate sexual assault; -stats on perps (Lisak study?) ; -promoting equity, address harmful stereotypes, and unsafe environments; -can do this by addressing cultural norms, discussing reputation of establishment, implementing policies (including required training for all staff and on-going activities), addressing unacceptable behaviors of patrons and zero tolerance
Elevatus
-
By providing accurate and practical educational materials and trainings we hope to elevate, educate and navigate this topic. Many people have said that talking about sexuality was a lot easier than they thought it would be and have gained confidence in this area with just a little support. Remember, ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power. People with disabilities deserve and need knowledge just like anyone else, and, you can help elevate us all.

-

As participants learn the skills and strategies in Mind Matters, they can begin to take charge of themselves and their responses to what life throws at them. Participants learn to address their physical, relational, and mental health needs.
Bystander Intervention
-
Bystander Intervention: Being harassed or abused, regardless of the why (race, sex, religion, gender, size, orientation, disability, age, origin, etc.) is a very traumatic experience. But imagine that it happens while surrounded by lots of others (bystanders) who see what is happening, but then do nothing. The steps of intervening include being able to identify potentially risky behaviors and recognize behaviors that could lead to a high risk situation, identify how you decide whether or not to take action (There is no “right way” to show support to someone being targeted and harassed), identify what options you have to take action, and build necessary skills to feel confident in taking action. The goals of bystander intervention are to reduce harm in the moment and make our presence known to the person who is being harassed or has the potential to be hurt, and ultimately change the behaviors that could cause harm, and also to continue to be a bystander after harmful things occur by following up and working with others to create a culture of respect.
-
Stand Up and Speak Out: Discuss some specific ideas about bystander intervention skills and strategies as well as how to have hard conversations. Being harassed or abused, regardless of why, is a very traumatic experience. But imagine that it happens while surrounded by lots of others (bystanders) who see what is happening, but then do nothing.
